Since 1 January 2021, personal data is no longer displayed when looking up .li and .ch domain names. Access to the personal data of the holder of a domain name is only granted on request, provided that the claimant individual or organisation proves their identity and substantiates an overriding legitimate interest in the requested data.
Whether an overriding legitimate interest exists is determined on a case-by-case basis. A legitimate interest may exist if, for example:
- a holder or technical contact of the domain name wishes to review the current entry
- a domain name infringes trademark rights
- the content of a website infringes copyright or personality rights
- an authority, acting within its remit, requires the data to fulfil statutory responsibilities.
The desire to purchase a domain name or to contact the operator of a website is not sufficient.
